The first nine days of Ashvayuja month are called as Sharannavaratri and are measured daily. The last three days of celebrating Durgashtami, Maharnavami, Vijayadashami or Dussehra festival have many legends and history.
Symbolizing the victory of good over evil, this festival is called “Vijayadasami or Dussehra”. These
sharannavaratras are the best spiritual way for man to take shelter of his ten vices namely lust, krodha, madha, matsara, moha, lobha, swardha, iniquity, inhumanity and pride in these navratras. It is

When is Dussehra Vijayadashami 2024?
In the year 2024, Shukla Paksam Dashami Tithi will start on Saturday, October 12 at 10.58 am and end
on October 13 at 9.08 am. Dussehra festival is celebrated on October 12. Any work can be started without looking at the moment.
Ithihasa Puranas say that when all the deities together kneaded or churned the Palasamudra, the nectar was produced on the day of Dussehra Vijayadashami 2024 . This Ashvayuja Masa Dashami, which is associated with Sravana Nakshatra, has the sign of Vijaya. So it can be said that this is also the name of Vijayadashami.
Irrespective of Tithi, Varan, Tarabalam, Grahabalam and Muhurtam etc. success is assured in any work
undertaken on the day of Dussehra festival. According to the Chaturvarga Chintamani text, victory is said to be at the time of Nakshatrodaya of Ashvayuja Shukla Dashami. So this holy time is said to be the achievement of all vaanchitartha sadhaka.
What does history say?
According to history, on Vijayadashami day, apart from Rama’s victory in the battle against Ravana, it is also the day when the Pandavas went into exile and took back their weapons from the Jammi tree. On the 10th day, the people celebrated this Dussehra festival with joy on the occasion of Goddess Durga, the Mother of God, fighting the demon Mahishasura for nine nights and killing him and getting victory.
Why do Shami Puja?
Shami Puja Dashami day is very special to do. Shami tree is Jammichetu. When the Pandavas were in
hiding, they hid their weapons on the Samivriksha i.e. the Jammi tree. At this time the Pandavas, who
were in Virata’s pool, prayed to the tree and worshiped it after their year of exile was over and got their
weapons back. So by receiving the blessings of Goddess Aparajita in the form of Shamivriksha, the
Pandavas achieve victory over the Kauravas.
It is symbolic that Rama worshiped Aparajita Devi on Vijayadashami and endured Ravana. In Telangana there is also a tradition of seeing a quail after Shami Puja. On the evening of Vijayadashami, after Nakshatra darshan, Aparajitadevi is worshiped at Samivriksha. Apart from that, they do pradakshini around the Jammi tree, remembering this mantra “Sami Samayate Papam Sami Shatri Nivarini, Arjunasya Dhanurthari Ramasya Priyadarshini”. Sheets written on this hymn are stuck to the branches of the tree or cut. People believe that doing this will bring grace of Goddess and also cure Shanidosha.
Goddess Durga who killed Mahisharu on this day:
Blessed with the boons of Lord Brahma, Mahishasura fought a fierce battle with the gods, defeated
them, and assumed the position of Indra. When Devendra went to the three idols and shouted, their
anger against Mahishu turned into a bright light. The energy of the Trinity is concentrated and born as a female form. Incarnated as Mangalamurthy with face of Shiva’s radiance, arms of Vishnu’s radiance and feet of Brahma’s radiance, Vidanga with eighteen arms, she was given Shiva’s Shulam, Vishnu’s wheel, Indra’s Vajrayudham, Lord Brahma’s letter, Kamandala the vehicle of Himavant . In this way, having prepared the weapons of all the gods, he faced the army of Mahishasura and fought a fierce battle. After killing Udadra, Mahahanu, Asilomu, Bashkala, Bidalu etc. who came to the war on behalf of Mahishasura, she faced Mahishasura.
In this war, the lion, the vehicle of the goddess, tore the enemies to pieces. Asura, who faced the
goddess, fought fiercely with Mahishirupa, lion form and human form. Finally he was killed by the
goddess in the form of Mahishirupa. Thus since then the day of slaying of Mahisha is known as
Dussehra. Same as Vijayadashami. Shami Puja is also performed on Vijayadashami day itself. It is also
said that during the exile of Lord Rama, the cottage was built from the wood of Jammi tree. Shami
means destroyer of sins and enemies. The Pancha Pandavas used to hide their weapons in the Shami or Jammi tree before going into hiding. Yogis, like common people, worship the Goddess on Navratri.

Durga fought with Mahishasura for nine nights and killed him. So on this occasion, on the tenth day, all the people celebrated the festival. So, that is Vijayadashami. The importance of Devi Puja is very high in East India. Vijayadasani is the auspicious moment when the deities churn the ocean of milk and amrita is born.

The festival of Dussehra Vijayadashami is associated with the milk quail, which shines in blue. People consider it lucky and auspicious to see a milk quail on Vijayadashami after Navratri. Victories like the slaying of Mahisharu are symbolically represented by Palapitta. If you see that quail, it means success. That’s why pundits say that if you see a quail on the day of the festival, you should consider it lucky. Apart from that, there is no need to see Muhurta on that day for starting new works, buying new vehicles, worshiping them and any other work.
