Prime Minister Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has announced a new scheme called Rooftop Solar in the Budget 2024-25. After that, the Prime Minister launched the ‘PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijili Yojana’ on 15 February 2024. Solar panels are installed in houses under this scheme with a noble objective of providing free electricity to households and providing extra money for additional power generation.
To ensure that there is no cost burden on the people, the central government provides heavily subsidized bank loans directly to people’s bank accounts with substantial subsidies. Government subsidy covers up to 40 percent of the cost of installing solar panels.
PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana: This scheme provides poor and middle class families Rs. 15,000 to Rs. The government aims to install solar panels in crore homes across the country under the scheme annually by availing free solar power worth up to Rs 18,000 crore and selling the surplus power to power distribution companies. Through this scheme, the government will save approximately Rs. 75,000.
Objectives of Rooftop Solar Yojana
The Rooftop Solar Yojana, or Pradhanmantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijili Yojana, aims to provide up to 300 units of free electricity every month, to light up crore homes. The main objective of the scheme is to reduce household electricity costs by installing rooftop solar panels and harnessing solar energy.
The scheme aims to reduce dependence on conventional energy sources by installing rooftop solar panels in households and moving towards sustainable energy practices. It contributes to clean and sustainable solar energy.

Eligibility Criteria for Rooftop Solar Scheme:

Applicants should belong to poor and middle-income families.
Applicants must have their own residence with a roof suitable for installing solar panels.
Applicants must have a valid electricity connection.
Rooftop Solar/PM Surya Ghar Muft Bizli Yojana Installation Subsidies:
PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana : Under the Rooftop Solar Scheme, the government provides the following subsidies for installing solar panels:
Up to 2 kW – Rs. 30,000 per kW.
For additional capacity up to 3 kW – Rs. 18,000 per kW.
Total subsidy for systems larger than 3 kW – up to Rs. 78,000.

How to Apply for Rooftop Solar Scheme
PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana : Following are the steps to apply for Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana:
- Step 1: Visit in the official website of PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana.
- Step 2: Click on the ‘Apply for Rooftop Solar’ button it is on the left side of the homepage.
- Step 3: Select the state, district and electricity distribution company, enter your customer account number and click on ‘Next’.
- Step 4: Enter your mobile number and email and follow the instructions to complete the registration.
- Step 5: Login with your customer account number and mobile number.
- Step 6: Apply for ‘Rooftop Solar’ in that
- Step 7: After applying for rooftop solar, wait for the feasibility approval from the discom. Once the feasibility approval is approved, install the plant through a registered vendor in your discom. You can find a registered seller near you by clicking here and entering your state in the search bar on the page.
- Step 8: Submit plant details and apply for net meter after installation is complete.
- Step 9: After installing the net meter and DISCOM inspection, they will generate the commissioning certificate from the portal.
- Step 10: After you get commission report, then submit your bank account details and canceled check by logging into the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijili Yojana portal. You will get the subsidy in your bank account within 1 month
